Coming 2 America has reportedly been sold to Amazon Studios in a deal worth $125million (£97million) ahead of its expected release in December.

The long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 comedy, Coming To America, has reportedly been sold by its distributor, Paramount Pictures, in the big-money deal, according to Variety’s sources.

The final details of the deal are still being hashed out, including two marketing deals which are expected to transger over with the film and Eddie, who stars in and produced the movie, has to also give his approval.

The movie is expected to premiere on December 18, and is said to be a ‘priority’ for Amazon Studios’ chief, Jennifer Salke, who has acquired the sequel to Borat as well as Without Remorse, starring Michael B. Jordan and One Night In Miami which is expected to be an Oscar contender.

The sale of Coming 2 America to the streaming service is due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic meaning movie theatres are still subject to closures and social distancing regulations.

The sequel will see Eddie reprise his role as African prince Akeem who had travelled to New York to escape an arranged marriage.

In the upcoming movie, Prince Akeem is set to become the king of Zamunda, a fictional country, before discovering he has a son he didn’t know about in America.

Fans have been clamouring for a sequel to the movie for decades, with the original grossing almost $300million (£232million) at the worldwide box office.

The movie had initially been planned for a theatrical release but will be moving to Amazon Studios instead after several streaming platforms expressed interest in it, according to reports.

Paramount has also sold other movies to streaming platforms this year, including Trial of the Chicago 7 and Lovebirds which both went to Netflix.

Coming 2 America is scheduled for release on December 18.
