Courteney Cox has spoken about her time on the cast of Friends, admitting that she was ‘hurt’ to be the only regular not to receive an Emmy nomination.
Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry all earned nominations during their Friends careers, and Courteney revealed that it was tough not to have received the same recognition.
The actress spoke on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM show with co-stars Jennifer and Lisa, saying: ‘It always hurt my feelings.’
‘When every single cast member was nominated but me, it definitely hurt my feelings. I was happy for everybody, and then when it was finally like, “Oh, I’m the only one?” It hurt,’ she added.
While all the main stars of Friends were nominated, only Jennifer and Lisa went on to win Emmy awards during the hugely popular comedy’s run.
However, Courteney said the ‘sting’ over a lack of recognition faded once she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in Cougar Town.
‘The only thing that made me feel good — because they’ve all won and they’ve gotten so many accolades — I got nominated for Cougar Town the first year — a Golden Globe. And I want to say, “Oh, who cares?” It meant everything to me.’
‘I wanted my peers to respect me and I know that the Golden Globes is not your peers, necessarily, but it’s like, “Ah!” It took a little of the sting out.’
As the song goes, though, Friends are always there for each other and Courtney was chuffed for her fellow cast members to do well after receiving Emmy nods.
‘I want them to win, I just also want to be part of I’ve never wanted to take anything away from anyone,’ she said.
‘I just sometimes want to be included in certain things… and these girls on the show and the guys, everyone deserved every [nomination]. I’m in awe of both of your talent.’
It comes after the Friends reunion aired on HBO Max recently, sending fans into a frenzy with a series of revelations – not least the fact that Jennifer and David confessed to having a huge crush on each other back in the day.
Since then, Jennifer has insisted she would fess up to the world if she ever had a sexual relationship with her Friends co-star.
David opened up about his attraction to the Rachel Green star at the one-off HBO Max special.
‘The first season I had a major crush on Jen and at some point we were both crushing on each other,’ he told host James Corden.
Friends: The Reunion is available to stream on HBO Max in the US, while it is available on Sky and NOW in the UK.
